Even though WhatsApp supports voice and video calls, texting remains its core functionality. Be it Good Morning wishes, jokes, forwards, or important messages — people prefer to send them over text. And what better way to make them more powerful by using text formatting?

No, we are not talking about modifying the text in WhatsApp Status, but referring to text messages. Here, we shall share some cool WhatsApp font tips and tricks to add a more dramatic effect to your messages.

Let’s begin.

1. MAKE TEXT BOLD:

WhatsApp comes with a built-in feature that lets you make your messages bold. You can make the text bold when you need to highlight a critical point.

To do so, add an asterisk (*) before and after the message. For instance, in the message Android is better than iOS, if you want to highlight the word better, you need to write it like this — Android is *better* than iOS. Once you o that, you will see that the text is now bold.

Tap on Send.

2. MAKE TEXT ITALIC:

Similarly, if you want to make the text italic, you can do that too. Italicizing a text is useful when you want to emphasize an important part.

To do so, add underscore (_) before and after the text. For instance, in the message Be _careful_ what you wish for, the word careful will appear in italic.

3. STRIKETHROUGH MESSAGE

Sometimes you want to create a dramatic effect of striking out a text to represent a correction or iteration. That is possible by adding a strike through your message.

To add a line to your message, place a tilde (~) on both sides of the word(s). Let’s say you want to write Instagram is the best social network by cutting Facebook. You need to enter the text like this ~Facebook~ Instagram is the best social network.

4. CHANGE FONT

Other than the standard font, WhatsApp also supports Monospace font. However, there is no global setting in WhatsApp to change the font for every text. You need to change it individually for every message.

To change the font, enclose the text in three backticks (```). This is how the text should be ```How you doin'?```

NOTE: Do not leave space between the symbols and text.

5. CHANGE TEXT FORMAT USING WHATSAPP OPTIONS

Instead of using shortcuts to format the text, you can use the built-in settings. On Android, tap and hold the message and choose the appropriate formatting option. Tap on the three-dot icon to view other options. On iPhone, tap and hold the text and select the option that states BIU. Then choose the formatting option from bold, italic, strikethrough, and monospace.

6. COMBINE FORMATTING OPTIONS

Whether you are using the shortcuts or the native settings, you can combine different formatting options for one word or sentence. Meaning, you can make the same text bold, italic, and even change its font to Monospace.

To do so, enclose the text in the respective symbols. The only thing you need to take care of is their order. The symbol that was entered first will be closed last. For instance, in this word *~_disney_~*, we have entered an asterisk first. Now we will put it at the end.

Alternatively, use the touch and hold method to change the text format. First, select one option, then highlight the text again and select another option.

NOTE: WhatsApp doesn’t support underlining the text.

7. CHANGE WHATSAPP FONT SIZE

Is the default font size of WhatsApp bothering you? Well, you can always change its size. Unlike other apps where the font size is limited to the device font, WhatsApp offers a native setting to change the text size.

NOTE: This feature is available on Android only.

To do so, follow the steps:

Step 1: On your Android device, open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot icon at the top right corner. Then select Settings from the menu.

Step 2: Go to Chats and tap on Font size. Select the font size of your choice from the three options — small, medium, and large.

PRO TIP: In the same setting, you can also change the WhatsApp language.

8. SEND COLORFUL MESSAGES

Another trick that is exclusive to Android devices is the ability to change text color. However, WhatsApp doesn’t officially support this feature. You need to download a third-party app called BlueWords. With the help of the app, you can make your text blue.

Download BlueWords

Download the app on your device, and enter the text whose color you want to change in the typing area. Then tap the Blue option and touch the message to copy it. Go back to WhatsApp and paste the text that you copied.

NOTE: The receiver doesn’t need to have this app.

9. STYLISH FONT

While WhatsApp doesn’t support any other font other than Monospace, you can use the above-mentioned third-party app to change font styles as well. The app offers many choices. Just enter the text and copy-paste it into WhatsApp.

Unlike Instagram, which offers multiple font styles for Stories, WhatsApp isn’t that cool. While it lets you change the font in text status, it doesn’t let you change the font in normal status. However, you can use the same app to change the font style in both types of status. For that, copy-paste the text from the app to WhatsApp Status using the text tool.

PRO TIP: You can use this app to generate stylish fonts for your Instagram bio as well.

10. TYPE USING EMOJIS

Fan of emojis? Take that love to text level by typing everything in emojis. While it may not be a good way to text when you are using full sentences, you can use it for special messages.

You need to download a third-party app on your Android device that goes by Emoji Letter Maker's name. In the app, enter the letters and emojis. Then using the settings (plus) icon, modify it and share it with others on WhatsApp.

WHICH meteorites landed on Earth after a 22-LAKH-year voyage:

For the first time, scientists have been able to precisely map the flight path of an asteroid that landed on Earth and trace it back to its point of origin. The boulder-size fragment's journey to our planet began 22 million years ago, according to new research.

The asteroid, known as 2018 LA, appeared like a fireball in the skies over Botswana on June 2, 2018, before breaking apart and landing in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Prior to breaking up in Earth's atmosphere, scientists determined that the asteroid was about 5 feet (1.7 meters) in diameter, weighed 12,566 pounds and had been traveling at 37,282 miles per hour.

"As the asteroid broke up 27 km (16.7 miles) above ground, it was 20,000 times brighter than the full moon," said Christian Wolf, study coauthor and associate professor from the Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, in a statement.

The study published last week in the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science.

Researchers were able to locate the fragments, called meteorites, and study them. Their findings provide new insights into the history of our solar system.

Tracing an asteroid:

The asteroid was discovered to be on an impact trajectory with Earth on June 2, 2018, and eight hours after it was detected, it appeared over South Africa with a flash.

The asteroid was first spotted by the University of Arizona's Catalina Sky Survey, appearing like a faint dot of light zipping among the stars. The astronomical survey is part of NASA's Planetary Defense program and searches for asteroids approaching Earth.

"Small meter-sized asteroids are no danger to us, but they hone our skills in detecting approaching asteroids," said Eric Christensen, study coauthor and director of the Catalina Sky Survey program, in a statement.

Data from the Catalina Sky Survey, as well as ANU's SkyMapper telescope in New South Wales, were able to map the asteroid's journey to Earth.

This is only the second time scientists have been able to observe an asteroid in space before it impacted Earth. The first was asteroid 2008 TC3 in Sudan 10 years earlier, according to Peter Jenniskens, lead study author and meteor astronomer at the SETI Institute and NASA's Ames Research Center.

Meteorites among the wildlife:

Data from multiple astronomical observations, along with video recorded of the fireball, helped researchers determine the meteorites had fallen in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, where wildlife like leopards and lions live.

The Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks and the country's Department of National Museum and Monuments helped the researchers search and stay safe in their quest to locate the fragments.

On the last day of the search, Lesedi Seitshiro from the Botswana International University of Science and Technology found the first one. It weighed 0.6 ounces (18 grams) and was only about 1.2 inches (3 centimeters) in size.

"The meteorite is named 'Motopi Pan' after a local watering hole," said Mohutsiwa Gabadirwe, study coauthor and geoscientist at the Botswana Geoscience Institute, in a statement. "This meteorite is a national treasure of Botswana."

Gabadirwe is now the curator of the Motopi Pan meteorite.

The researchers uncovered a total of 23 fragments within a few months of the event.

Finding home:

The asteroid's path was traced back to Vesta, the second-largest asteroid in our solar system. It's "the only one bright enough to be sometimes visible to the unaided eye," Onken said.

Vesta's Veneneia basin was created by an impact, and the 2018LA asteroid was a chunk of Vesta that went hurtling into space when this impact happened, according to the researchers.

Motopi Pan belongs to a group of Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenites meteorites, so named due to their composition, that came from Vesta, which is located in the inner part of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Some of the oldest known materials from Vesta and the meteorites include Zircon mineral grains that date to more than 4.5 billion years ago, back to the birth of our solar system.

"Combining the observations of the small asteroid in space with information gleaned from the meteorites shows it likely came from Vesta, second largest asteroid in our Solar System and target of NASA's DAWN mission," Jenniskens said. "Billions of years ago, two giant impacts on Vesta created a family of larger, more dangerous asteroids. The newly recovered meteorites gave us a clue on when those impacts might have happened.

Understanding the connections between meteorite fragments and the asteroids they came from is tricky. While scientists understand the current locations and sizes of about 1 million asteroids today, they don't know their compositions. Meanwhile, they understand what meteorites are made of, but they don't know where most of them came from before they crashed into Earth.

"That in essence is what we are trying to solve: matching meteorites types to asteroid types. Tracing back all the way to a likely crater, it is a bit like looking for clues for a murder that happened 22 million years ago and trying to understand what happened," said Hadrien Devillepoix, study coauthor and astronomer at Curtin University in Australia.

"Every time we recover a fresh meteorite with an associated orbit, we slowly map the composition of the asteroid belt. The more of these we get, the better this map gets."
